Welcome to Calbirra Australian Shepherds.
The name Calbirra comes from the initials of each member of our family, Chris, Andrew, Luke and Brodie. Our Aussies are also members of our family and we love to share our enjoyment of the breed with those we meet who are captivated by them.
I have been an animal lover all my life, having a cat from the age of 5 and spending my childhood helping my mum to raise Cocker Spaniel puppies. As a young adult I had my first dog Cassie, a German Shepherd x, who lived to the age of 15 despite cruciate ligament surgery. Once married, Andrew and I purchased a small hobby farm and adopted a heeler x. I was able to live my dream of owning a horse and spent many years riding through the state forest, competing in Dressage and enjoying the local riding club.
When a back complaint told me it was time to give riding away I became interested in Dog agility. I had also planned that one day I would follow in mum's breeder footsteps but had not found the breed that I was passionate about. I began to research working breeds that were suited to agility and looked at a few litters and then I saw my first Aussie. I will never forget how stunned I was to find such a beautiful dog that I had never seen or heard of and yet it was called an "Australian" Shepherd. That dog was "Clancy" a blue merle dog pictured on the Vic Dog website. He belonged to Pauline Rowbury of Silvanwood Kennels, situated only 20 minutes from me. After speaking to Pauline and being welcomed to come and visit to see puppies I could not get there fast enough and met a little 3 week old black-tri girl who was to change my life! I was given the opportunity to buy her on breeders terms and Teagan came home in December 2003.
From there I have been a completely devoted Aussie owner, spending the last few years learning everything I can from Pauline and many other helpfull breeders. They say you can't stop at one with Aussies and that is so true. When Pauline decided to breed Teagan I was given the opportunity to raise the litter and a gorgeous red-tri daughter called Amber became our second Aussie.
We are located in Longwarry, the "gateway to Gippsland", in Victoria. Our home is set on 4 acres amongst large farms filled with Deer, Alpaca and dairy cattle. It is a green peacefull place with a lot of room for our lovely dogs to run, and run they love to do. Our aussies love to go for walks, go with us on holidays, visit friends as well as go to shows and performance competitions. It is a great place to raise puppies, a safe and spacious place to explore, take in the fresh air and build up healthy appetites. Here babies can grow healthy coates and good strong bone and develop their skills of chasing toys and each other!!!! Then they sleep!!!!!
The main thing we give our aussies is our time and plenty of love. The babies are a part of our family until they go to their "forever homes". They will meet visitors big and small, male and female from an early age and learn social skills, basic manners, crate time and how to deal with a variety of new situations. They will go to their new homes with a healthy start in life and our puppy owners are well equiped with information and guidance. Help is only a phone call away. We take pleasure in receiving pictures and news of our puppies and love to see them again once they are grown.
Please enjoy browsing through our site. We are happy to talk with you about Aussies and whether they are the right breed for your family and lifestyle.
