Calbirra Australian Shepherds

About Aussies

The origin of the Australian Shepherd breed is uncertain.  It is believed that they travelled to Australia with the Basque shepherds who came from Spain seeking work with the importation of Merino Sheep. Americans who were impressed by Merino wool, bought Merino sheep and some of the Shepherds with their dogs travelled to the US to work the stock. Another theory is that the breed was influenced by the Smithfield, Collie and German Coolie in Australia. Whilst the breed's early ancestors were most likely originated in the mountains of Spain and France, it is certainly their association with Australia that led to them being known Australian Shepherds in the US where the breed has continued to develop to this day.

The breed has only been reintroduced to Australia since 1990 and officially recognized by the ANKC on 1st January 1994. The breed is continuing to grow in popularity and recognition for its versatility and success in confirmation, obedience, herding, and other fields.

The Aussie, as they are affectionately known, is a of medium size and bone and slightly longer than tall. Males ideally range from 20 to 23 inches at the wither with a slightly stronger head and body and more coat than the female. The ideal size range for a female is 18 to 21 inches at the wither. They have a double coat, downy undercoat and coarser guard hairs and require a brush once a week to remove loose hairs and tangles. They come in four main colours, Black tri (black, white and copper), Red Tri ( Red, white and copper), Blue Merle and Red Merle. The tail may be full or may be a short or long bob.

The Australian Shepherd is an active working dog with strong herding and guarding instincts. They are highly intelligent, loyal, protective and willing to please. They make excellent watch dogs and farm dogs and love children so make a wonderful family companion but they have a strong drive to work and need something to do. They require socialization when young and stimulation and regular medium exercise. Being playfull they love a game and interaction with their families but also strongly desire to be with you on the couch at the end of the day. They are easily house trained and generally obedient to commands. They will usually only bark when they are sounding the alarm to warn of the arrival of a visitor or a noise nearby. Most aussies love water and love to retrieve balls, toys and frisbies. They are attentive, muscular and balanced with the stamina to work all day.

Aussies are good natured and even tempered and may be reserved when meeting strangers but should not display fear, or agression. They have a distinctive characteristic when happy to see you as they may greet you with a grin (not to be confused with a snarl), curling their lips and showing their teeth. They also sometimes wiggle their bodies with excitement and "talk" when being praised making a singing noise. Whilst posative training methods are recommended, some clever aussies may take advantage of this type of training and will respond better to fair but firm direction from their leader.

Aussies are not for everyone. They are a very intelligent breed with strong desire to be your devoted servant and companion and need your time and love. Please consider your lifestyle carefully before buying an aussie.
